Oatmeal News

The benefits of oatmeal are well known. Brimming with omega-3 fatty acids, folate, and potassium, oatmeal's soluble fiber beta-glucan has the ability to lower levels of LDL cholesterol and help keep arteries clear.  These great health benefits alone, along with great taste make it a popular superfood. Now, new research sheds light on the anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and heart-health properties we gain from oatmeal.
A group of eleven international scientists from around the globe presented their new findings at at the 247th Annual Conference of the American Chemical Society in Dallas, TX.  Research covered many of the known benefits of oats, but gave particular attention to the phenolic compound that is only found  in oats named avenanthramide (AVE) . AVE is believed to  have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-itch and anti-cancer properties. The studies offered  more evidence that these AVEs may offer important heart protection.
This research is a great addition to the preponderance of information that has become available about the health benefits of oats.  Recently, a study published in the American Heart Journal found that eating 6 servings of whole grains each week slowed the the build-up of the plaque that narrows the vessels through which blood flows, and the narrowing arterial passages caused by stenosis.  Other studies have shown that oatmeal is particularly helpful for post-menopausal women as protection against breast cancer.  Additionally, the fiber in oatmeal in the morning will help keep tabs on that appetite through your day!
