Exercise and Breathing Problems

Approximately eighteen million Americans have asthma ... the majority of them will suffer symptoms after exercising. However, an additional 5 to 7 percent of the population who aren't asthmatic also suffer breathing problems after exercising. They suffer from a condition called Exercise Induced Asthma or EIA. Typically, people with EIA have airways that are especially sensitive to sudden changes in temperature and humidity. During exercise people with EIA typically breathe through their mouths. In fact, this condition is very common! The best way to avoid EIA is plenty of fluids and the inclusion of short repeated warm up sessions in your workout regimen. It's a matter of life and breath!
