Tackling Diabetes with Fitness

The National Diabetes Statistics Report, 2014 found that 29.1 million Americans, or 9.3% of the population, had diabetes in 2012 -- compared to 25.8 million or 8.3% in 2010. The prevalence rate for adults age 20 and older in 2012 was 12.3%, compared to 11.3% in 2010. In other words, diabetes remains a growing health problem in the United States. We can contain this health disaster! A 2006 study from the New England Journal of Medicine offers some important information. During this research, five hundred individuals were examined and given the following goals:
  • Lose weight.
  • Limit fat intake to 30% of calories consumed, concentrate on healthy fats, from fatty fish, nuts and health oils (olive oil, grape seed oil, etc)
  • Take in less than 10 mg of saturated fat per day.
  • Engage in moderate exercise at least 30 minutes a day.
After four years the incidence of diabetes in the study group dropped 64% in men and 54% in women when compared to national averages. No one who achieved all of the goals developed diabetes! Stunning results based on simple fitness rules!
