Peter's Principles - Exercise

Is a 30-minute Workout Effective?

For years we've been hearing that 30-minutes a day is the minimum for healthy physical activity. Now The Institute Of Medicine says at least one hour is the benchmark. So who's right and what kind of exercise qualifies?

Suppose your daily half-hour regimen includes things like yard and housework, or a walk to the store. Will that fill the bill? The answer is probably no. Here are the latest guidelines. If you don't need to lose weight, then perform 30-minutes of moderate aerobic activity per day. To lose weight, extend that number to 60-minutes per day, six to seven days per week. It doesn't have to be done all at once; three twenty-minute sessions will do the trick. Walking is excellent, but keep the pace brisk. When you feel accustomed to the workout add weights and you're on the way to better health.
