Carl from Richmond emails for supplements that can help prevent cancer.
Carl, unlike school, in this case getting a "D" is a very good thing!

Boosting intake of vitamin D to one thousand international units a day can cut the risk of colon, ovarian, breast, and even prostate cancer. And it's a cheap fix! A daily dose of vitamin d will only set you back about a nickel. When you weight that against the pain and suffering of cancer, the cost of vitamins isn't even a consideration.

Vitamin D may work by inhibiting the growth of blood vessels that allow cancer to grow and spread. So many studies not point to the anti-cancer properties of vitamin D -- there's really no reason not to use it. The benefits outweigh any risk.

In this case get a D and move to the head of the class!

Rachel from Northville emails saying she's very overweight. She's tried to exercise but just can't stick with a program. Help!

Rachel, there's a simple thing for you to try and it's called music. Try walking to your favorite tunes.

A study found tuning in to any type of music while working out helps people, especially those who are overweight, stick with exercise. They even seem to get better results!

Researchers compared two groups. One group walked to music, the other didn't. The group that walked to music lost more weight and body fat than those who were tuneless. The music listeners were also more likely to stick with their exercise program.

So turn the radio up -- and hit the treadmill!

Ed from Farmington Hills wants to know -- what's the deal with all these toothpaste choices, which one should he use?

Actually Ed, you don't really need to use any! it's not the toothpaste that gets your teeth clean -- it's the way you brush your teeth. You should brush your teeth for a total of 2 minutes! Sounds like a long time? Not really. That's only 30 seconds for each section of your mouth!

What do I mean by sections? You have the upper front part of your teeth, the upper back (meaning behind your teeth). Then there's the lower front and lower back. Ask your dentist for a more detailed description on your next visit.

As far as toothpaste -- there are some advantages. Many contain flouride, which can protect against cavities. And it tastes good, which helps us brush longer.

What about pastes which contain teeth whitening? Most dentists say they really don't work that well, but the won't harm your teeth either.

Do you have a question you've been working on? Send me an email!
