PETER'S PRINCIPLES - NEW IN PRINT

Frank from Waterford has heard about a possible link between blood sugar and memory problems. He emails asking for more information.

Frank, the latest research does seem to point in that directions! Researchers have found that adults with high levels of glucose performed worse on tests of short-term memory than those with normal glucose levels. The parts of the brain that are used for learning and memory were actually smaller! High blood sugar levels mean the body can not effectively remove glucose from the blood and body tissues including the brain where it is used as fuel. Right now researchers are examining whether the problem can be reversed through diet and exercise. But think about this, it is one thing when improper diet affects the way you look, it is a different thing when it may affect the way you think!

Sue from Garden Heights emails and is planning a family. She wants to know the latest on supplements that can benefit fetus brain power.
Sue, you are sure to find this research interesting! Researchers are now testing a supplement that can make babies smarter still inside the womb! It is a nutrient called Choline. Choline is a B type vitamin found in peanuts, soy and eggs. Research shows that lab animals getting more Choline in the womb have greater learning abilities! They are now testing the Choline effect in humans.

Pregnant women can get Choline in either food or supplement form. Scientists will test the cognitive abilities of the babies as they approach their first birthday. Until more research is done a diet that is rich in Choline could be just the right thing for your newborn!
