PETER'S PRINCIPLES - NEW IN PRINT
Mike from Taylor e-mailed looking for safety tips related to snow shoveling.
Mike, each year dozens of residents die needlessly from exertion brought on due to snow shoveling. It is a potent reminder of the dangers middle-aged men and women face from heavy shoveling. Local researchers took a look at sudden cardiac death before and after two local snowstorms, and the results say it all!
36 out of 271 subjects who died of cardiac arrest were shoveling snow at the time, 4 others were using snow blowers or other snow removal equipment. The reason behind this may be the sheer bulk of the job. During ten minutes of shoveling the average person will displace up to a ton of snow. The catalyst may be a boost in blood pressure and heart rate that dislodges cholesterol, triggering an attack.
Remember, until you have had a check up with your doctor hire someone to do your snow removal!
A new study looked at the breast cancer rate for ten years. researchers found the death rate from breast cancer dropped almost 25 percent. Nearly half the drop is linked to mammograms!
It’s recommended all women over the age of 40 get a mammogram every one to two years. It doesn’t take much time and it’s a test that could actually save your life!
